Have you ever felt like your circumstances, your past, or even your name were trying to limit your future?
In the Old Testament, tucked away in a list of family histories, we find a man named Jabez. His name literally meant “He causes pain.” Talk about a heavy label to carry through life! Yet, Jabez refused to let his past define his potential. Instead, he cried out to God with a bold, audacious prayer—and God completely changed his trajectory.
If you want to live a bigger and better life, it starts with understanding the four life-altering keys hidden within The Prayer of Jabez:
“Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, ‘I gave birth to him in pain.’ Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.’ And God granted his request.”
— 1 Chronicles 4:9-10
1. Pray for God to PROSPER You
“Oh, that you would bless me…”
Jabez didn’t ask for a small, ordinary life. He went straight to the Source and asked for God’s supernatural blessing. Praying for prosperity isn’t about greed; it’s about aligning yourself with God’s desire to see you thrive so you can be a blessing to others. God wants your whole being to flourish.

2. Pray for God’s PROMOTION
“…and enlarge my territory!”
When Jabez asked to enlarge his territory, he was asking for more influence, more responsibility, and greater horizons. True promotion doesn’t come from striving, politics, or luck. It comes from God. When you humble yourself, He is the one who expands your borders and elevates your life.
- Scripture to Hold Onto: “For promotion comes neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the desert. But God is the judge; He puts down one and sets up another.” — Psalms 75:6,7
- Scripture to Hold Onto: “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.” — *1 Peter 5:6 (NKJV)
3. Pray for God’s PRESENCE
“Let your hand be with me…”
An enlarged territory requires greater strength than you possess on your own. Jabez knew that having bigger blessings without God’s presence would lead to failure. We need God’s “hand”—His guidance, comfort, and power—walking right beside us every single day to face new challenges without fear.
- Scripture to Hold Onto: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9
- Scripture to Hold Onto: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” — Psalms 23:4
4. Pray for God’s PROTECTION
“…and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.”
The enemy always takes notice when you start living a bigger life. As God prospers, promotes, and guides you, you must actively pray for His hedge of protection. God is faithful to shield you from the pain of the enemy’s traps and keep you secure in His peace.

The Big Takeaway
The Bible ends this powerful account with five beautiful words: “And God granted his request.”
Jabez broke out of a legacy of pain and stepped into a big, beautiful life because he dared to pray boldly. Whatever limitations are standing in front of you today, remember that you serve a God who loves to expand your territory. Start praying for His Prosperity, Promotion, Presence, and Protection today!
