When the sun is shining, and life feels like a breeze, it’s easy to focus on the flashy parts of life—the things everyone can see. But just like building a house, the most critical part of your life is the part that is completely hidden from view: your foundation.
In his recent sermon, Summer School: Back to the Basics, Pastor David Soto challenged us to look beneath the surface and ask a vital question: What are we actually building our lives upon?
If you want to live a bigger, better, and more beautiful life, you have to get the basics right. Here are three powerful ways your foundation determines your future.
1. Your Foundation Determines Your Stability
“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Matthew 7:24
Storms are a guarantee of human life. The rain will fall, the waters will rise, and the winds will blow. Notice that in Jesus’ parable, both the wise and the foolish man faced the exact same storm. The difference wasn’t the weather; it was the foundation.
When you dig deep and anchor your life on the solid rock of faith and obedience, you gain absolute stability. When life gets shaky, you can stand firm, declaring: “Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.” (Psalms 62:2).
2. Your Foundation Determines Your Growth
“…having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith…” Colossians 2:7
You cannot grow high into the sky if your roots do not go deep into the ground. Your foundation dictates your capacity for growth.
Jeremiah 17:7-8 beautifully describes a life rooted in the right place: a tree planted by the water that doesn’t fear the heat, keeps its leaves green, and never fails to bear fruit even in a year of drought. If you want to flourish externally, you must be established internally.
3. Your Foundation Determines Your Longevity
“For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:11
A house built on sand might look great for a season, but it has no staying power. When the floods sweep down, it collapses into a heap of ruins. A life built on temporary things—like fame, money, or the approval of others—will eventually face a great crash.
True longevity comes from building on something unshakable. Because we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, building our lives on Christ ensures that our legacy lasts forever.
Talk It Over
Living a bigger and better life means being honest about where you stand. Take a few minutes today to reflect on these three questions:
- What am I building my life upon? Is it the solid rock of truth, or the shifting sands of circumstance?
- What spiritual habit is strengthening my foundation right now? (e.g., daily prayer, reading scripture, serving others).
- If a storm hit tomorrow, would my foundation hold? Why or why not?
If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do? (Psalms 11:3).
Don’t wait for the storm to start digging deep. Get back to the basics today!
