Not to Harm You (Part 2): How to Overcome Spiritually

By Pastor David Soto

We live in a world where fear, anxiety, and spiritual battles often feel overwhelming. But God’s promises for your life aren’t defined by defeat. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us of His heart: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”

In Christ, you aren’t fighting for victory; you are fighting from victory. Jesus declared in Luke 10:19, “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”

To step out of fear and into spiritual victory, you must master three fundamental spiritual truths:

1. Know Your Authority

Before you can overcome, you must understand who you are and what you’ve been given. From creation, God designed humanity for dominion (Genesis 1:26). When Jesus rose from the dead, He declared that all authority in heaven and earth belonged to Him (Matthew 28:18).

Here is the life-changing part: Christ shared that authority with you.

Ephesians 1:19–23 tells us that the exact same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead seated Him far above every power, ruler, and spiritual authority. Even better, Ephesians 2:6 reveals that God “raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms.” You don’t have to beg for power—you simply need to operate from the position God has already given you.

2. Know Your Enemy

You cannot defeat an adversary you ignore. First Peter 5:8 warns us to “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

However, our battle isn’t against flesh and blood—it’s spiritual. Second Corinthians 10:3–5 reminds us that our weapons have divine power to demolish strongholds, tear down false arguments, and take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ. When we know the enemy’s schemes (2 Corinthians 2:11), we stop being outwitted by his lies.

3. Walk in Your Authority

Knowing your authority isn’t enough; you must active step into it. James 4:7 gives us the two-step sequence for spiritual victory: “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

When trials come, stand firm by putting on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10–18):

  • Belt of Truth & Breastplate of Righteousness
  • Feet fitted with the Gospel of Peace
  • Shield of Faith (to extinguish flaming arrows)
  • Helmet of Salvation & Sword of the Spirit (the Word of God)
  • Prayer in the Spirit on all occasions

Look at how Jesus handled temptation in the wilderness (Luke 4:1–13). Every time the devil tested Him, Jesus didn’t debate—He wielded the Sword of the Spirit, responding with: “It is written.”

Talk It Over

Use these questions for personal reflection or group discussion this week:

  1. What is one area in your life where you need to stop living in fear and start walking in authority?
  2. What tactic of the enemy do you struggle with most, and what scripture can you stand on to overcome it?
  3. What is one practical step you can take this week to walk in your God-given authority?
