“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
— Jeremiah 29:11
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
— John 16:33
When hard times hit, it’s easy to wonder: “Is God upset with me? Is He trying to punish me?”
Jesus cleared up that misconception in John 16:33. He didn’t promise a life free of struggle—He plainly told us, “In this world you will have trouble.” But in the exact same breath, He gave us the ultimate reassurance: “Take heart! I have overcome the world.”
God’s heart toward you is never one of destruction. His heart is to give you a future filled with hope. Trouble will come because we live in a broken world, but God uses even our hardest seasons to refine us, protect us, and draw us closer to Him.
So, what should we do when we face trouble? Romans 12:12 gives us a powerful three-step strategy for standing firm when life gets rough.
What to Do When You Face Trouble
1. REJOICE IN HOPE
“Rejoice in hope…” — Romans 12:12 (CSB)
When hardship strikes, our default human response is often fear, complaints, or bitterness. But God calls us to a higher perspective. Rejoicing in hope isn’t about pretending the pain isn’t real or putting on a fake smile—it’s about anchoring your heart in who God is and what He has promised.
- James 1:2 — “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.”
- Hebrews 12:2 — “Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Joy in the middle of a storm comes when we fix our eyes on Jesus rather than the height of the waves around us.
2. BE PATIENT IN AFFLICTION
“…be patient in affliction…” — Romans 12:12 (CSB)
Nobody likes the waiting room of life, especially when that room is filled with pain, confusion, or grief. Yet God does some of His deepest work in our lives during seasons of difficulty. Affliction is often the soil in which deep faith takes root.
- Romans 5:3–5 — “We also boast in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope…”
- James 1:3–4 (NKJV) — “Knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”
- Acts 14:22 — “…strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying, ‘Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.'”
Patience isn’t just passively waiting around; it’s active endurance. It means trusting that God is building endurance and proven character in you through the trial.
3. BE PERSISTENT IN PRAYER
“…be persistent in prayer.” — Romans 12:12 (CSB)
When trouble comes, don’t vent to the world before you talk to the One who holds the world. Prayer is your direct line to God’s peace. When anxiety tries to take over your mind, persistence in prayer pushes back against fear.
- 1 Peter 5:7 — “Casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.”
- Philippians 4:6–7 — “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
- 1 Thessalonians 5:17 — “Pray constantly.”
Whatever burden you are carrying today, cast it onto Him. God wants to carry the weight that was never meant for your shoulders.
TALK IT OVER
Use these reflection questions for your personal quiet time or to guide your small group discussion this week:
- Rejoicing in Hope: When facing trials, our natural reaction is often frustration or anxiety. How can we learn to practically rejoice in hope when life gets difficult?
- Patience in Affliction: Looking back at a tough trial you have been through, how did God use that season of waiting or pain to grow your faith or refine your character?
- Persistence in Prayer: What is one specific area or burden where you feel challenged to be more persistent in prayer right now?
