Faith for the Fight: Standing Strong When Life Gets Tough (Part 2)

By Pastor David Soto

We all face moments where life hits us hard, standard routines collapse, and we are left staring at the ashes of what used to be. In 1 Samuel 30, David and his men returned home to Ziklag only to find the city burned to the ground, their possessions stolen, and their families taken captive.

Interestingly, the Hebrew root word for Ziklag means “to press (mentally) someone or something to reveal what is inside.” When life presses you, whatever is on the inside will spill out. How do you respond when you’re pushed to the limit?

When everything falls apart, David’s story shows us how to stand strong and fight through faith using three key principles.

1. When You Are Down, Get Up!

“David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God.” — 1 Samuel 30:6

David lost everything, and his closest companions turned against him. He could have surrendered to despair, but instead, he made a conscious choice: he found strength in the Lord.

Encouraging yourself isn’t about ignoring reality; it’s about shifting your perspective back to God’s power.

  • Psalm 42:6 (NLT): “Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God!”
  • Isaiah 40:31: “Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.”

When you get knocked down, don’t stay down. Turn your pain into praise and let God renew your strength.

2. When You Do Not Know What to Do, Look Up!

Then David said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring me the ephod.” …David inquired of the Lord… — 1 Samuel 30:7-8

In a moment of intense panic, David didn’t act on raw emotion or human logic. He stopped and sought God’s direction first.

When crisis strikes, our instinct is often to react impulsively. But spiritual wisdom requires us to look up before we step out.

  • Matthew 6:33: “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness…”
  • Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

When you don’t know your next step, pause and ask God for direction. He promises to guide your path.

3. When God Says Go, Step Out!

“Pursue them,” God answered. “You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue.” — 1 Samuel 30:8

David fought them from dusk until the evening of the next day… David recovered everything the Amalekites had taken… Nothing was missing: young or old, boy or girl, plunder or anything else they had taken. David brought everything back. — 1 Samuel 30:17-19

Once God gave the green light, David didn’t hesitate. He took immediate action, fought the battle, and restored everything that had been lost. Faith isn’t passive—it moves.

  • James 2:17: “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

When God gives you direction, take the step. Breakthrough requires active obedience.

Talk It Over

Use these questions for personal reflection or group discussion:

  1. When life knocks you down, what practical steps help you get back up and find your strength in God?
  2. How can you ensure you are actively seeking God’s guidance instead of making decisions based on temporary emotions?
  3. What is one area of your life right now where you believe God is asking you to step out in faith?
